Preventing Minor Water Damage

Emergency Water Damage Restoration

RestorationPeople might not take checking their plumbing on a regular basis for minor repairs that might be needed nearly as serious as they probably should. Just ask anyone who has had a slow leak under a sink that they were temporarily dealing with by placing a pan or bowl underneath. Ask them how they felt when they came home and found that the small leak had erupted into a flood that had for hours been saturating their kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room floor.

This can be a disaster that can and does happen suddenly and many times can be prevented if a little better precaution had been taken. Even a small flooded area in a home can cause some bad water damage to many things. It can cause damage to sheetrock, wood, flooring, furniture and many other home items in a short amount of time.

This kind of minor flooding can be caused by other things besides small leaks from your incoming water lines. Water hoses on washing machines, dishwashers and even refrigerators can burst or work loose. Bathtubs and sinks can overflow. When water is flowing into them or being pumped out through them, they can flood a lot of space in just a few minutes.

Many of these untimely and annoying water floods can be avoided if you check certain things regularly. It is a good idea to make up a check list that is personalized for your home. Write down all the things in your home where water comes in or goes out. Any pipes or connections should be inspected to make sure that no there is no damage, however minor, left to chance. You should repair them immediately. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in the event of potential water damage.

Areas underneath and outside your home should be regularly inspected as well. Outside water spigots and pipes underneath a home or in a basement are often places where people will ignore small problems until disaster finally happens and forces them to make the repairs..

Many of these minor problems can be repaired yourself very easily. It will save you time and money in the long run. Just by tightening a loose connection or replacing a worn out hose will be a lot faster and a lot cheaper than waiting until a break erupts and then extensive water clean up is added to the problem.

Water and Home Structural Damage

Water Damage Restoration

Whether your home is old or new, under certain conditions it can be susceptible to structural damage. This is something you will defiantly not want to allow to happen. The cost of having your home’s structure or foundation repaired can be enormous.

Structural damage can often happen to a home because of problems created by water. Water can find a place to seep into the foundation of your home and go from there. If your home is on a hill or sloped ground, water can puddle around the foundation of the home. When this happens, over time the water can eventually cause a foundation to sink. Just a few inches on any foundation area can cause tremendous damage to a homes structure. The cement blocks of the home’s base can crack from pressure or water erosion. Bricks on homes can separate where the mortar joins them together. These are obvious sign of foundation failure.

If a foundation begins to sink on any side of your home outside, it can cause damage to the inside as well. You may notice that your floors will begin to slope downward. Sheetrock may start cracking because the studs behind it are slowly becoming misaligned. Doorways may begin to slant one way or the other and make doors hard to open and close. Window frames can be affected as well.

If you notice these sorts of things inside your home, you probably have structural problems occurring. You will need to call in some help immediately. Structural damage can severely affect the value of your home. Having the problem fixed early on can prevent a major repair that can cost you thousands of dollars later.

After heavy rains, take note of how and where any excess water is accumulating. Keeping it from settling around your foundation is essential. If the drainage problems are something you are not sure how to correct, a landscaper might help.

Make sure the gutters on your home are working properly. If they have rusted spots in them, water can puddle in areas where it should not. Structural damage can also occur to your roof if gutters are loose or clogged and not working properly.

Water can be a friend to your home or it can be one of its worst enemies. It must come into and go out of your home properly and not take up residence where it is not supposed to. Inspect your home’s foundation annually to prevent it from being damaged by water.

Water Damage from Oil Spills

Water Damage from Oil Spills

There is hardly anything that helps to sustain humanity and other species on our planet more so than water. Conservationist and regular people everywhere are more concerned than ever by the many types of pollution that has infiltrated all our waterways Water pollution and the damage it can do to our future is very real and becoming a greater problem everyday.

Although there are many people who are doing their best to implement new solutions to water damage, it is not enough to keep up with the growing problem. Contaminants from factories and industries all over the world contribute to this problem. Many industries are committing themselves to help keep water pollution and the damage it can cause to a minimum.

Another source of water pollution and the damage that it can cause is from oil spills from ships that carry oil. There gave been several serious incidents involving ships that have leaked large amounts of oil into the oceans they travel on. These spills do not only contaminate the water, but the effect that it can have on fish and wildlife is horrendous.

Birds, fish, and other animals that ingest it or are caught in the oily residue will become sick or die from the exposure to this substance. Unless the oil spill is small or contained very quickly, it will eventually end up on the beaches and shorelines of the closest land area. Plant life on the coastlines can be destroyed as well. This is just one more form of preventable pollution that threatens us.

It is never the intention of industry or oil carrying ships to damage our water, land, or air. We have grown into a society that demands certain things and in trying to supply our demand these companies inadvertently cause this kind of damage to our planet. We must bear a certain amount of responsibility for the problem because if not for our want and need for the products they produce, no damage would occur, or at least it might be on a smaller scale.

We can all feel bad as much as we want to that our planet is getting dirty, but until we take a bigger stand and encourage real solutions for the pollutions, nothing may get done quickly enough. Our children will inherit this planet that we will one day leave behind and it is up to all of us to ensure that it will still be a decent place for them to live.

When Water Damage Causes Mold

Water Damage Restoration

There is a lot more attention being given today about the damage that mold can do in a home. Mold will grow where there is moisture for a prolonged period of time. Some surfaces are more susceptible to mold growth than others. When surfaces like wood, cloth, sheetrock, and carpeting become wet, they can be a perfect environment for the appearance of mold and mildew.

In homes or businesses that have had significant water damage due to flooding either from faulty plumbing or from Mother Nature can sustain much damage from the water itself. This damage can be compounded even more when is some surfaces are wet long enough to develop mold.

In cases where heavy flooding has occurred from things like hurricanes, tornadoes, and heavy rainfall that causes streams and rivers to over extend their banks, many times the ground floor of a home can get covered in water ranging anywhere from a few inches to many feet. In cases like the homes flooded by hurricane Katrina, many homes were flooded even to their second floors. These homes suffered the worst damage. Many people were not able to save their homes at all because by the time the water receded enough to allow access to them, the water had been there so long that it was impossible to salvage anything.

For those that suffered less damage and only had flooding of a few inches, most of their homes could be saved. It was still a tremendous undertaking to return their homes to their former state. Destroyed flooring, sheetrock, wood, and mold were all factors in the clean up process. Protective clothing and breathing mask had to be worn to protect people from toxic mold during clean up.

When there is flooding in a home on a smaller scale, like that caused by plumbing breaks, the damage might not be nearly as bad concerning walls and flooring if it can be cleaned up quickly enough. Mold growth can be prevented if all the water sodden surfaces are dried out thoroughly. Many times homeowners can clean up minor flooding like this their selves. The most important thing is that if a surface goes develop any mold, it should be killed by using chlorine bleach if possible or removing the effected surface area altogether. Mold on surfaces like sheetrock or wood will sometimes need to be removed because it is so hard to keep the growth from spreading.
