Preventing Minor Water Damage
Emergency Water Damage Restoration
RestorationPeople might not take checking their plumbing on a regular basis for minor repairs that might be needed nearly as serious as they probably should. Just ask anyone who has had a slow leak under a sink that they were temporarily dealing with by placing a pan or bowl underneath. Ask them how they felt when they came home and found that the small leak had erupted into a flood that had for hours been saturating their kitchen, bathroom, or laundry room floor.
This can be a disaster that can and does happen suddenly and many times can be prevented if a little better precaution had been taken. Even a small flooded area in a home can cause some bad water damage to many things. It can cause damage to sheetrock, wood, flooring, furniture and many other home items in a short amount of time.
This kind of minor flooding can be caused by other things besides small leaks from your incoming water lines. Water hoses on washing machines, dishwashers and even refrigerators can burst or work loose. Bathtubs and sinks can overflow. When water is flowing into them or being pumped out through them, they can flood a lot of space in just a few minutes.
Many of these untimely and annoying water floods can be avoided if you check certain things regularly. It is a good idea to make up a check list that is personalized for your home. Write down all the things in your home where water comes in or goes out. Any pipes or connections should be inspected to make sure that no there is no damage, however minor, left to chance. You should repair them immediately. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in the event of potential water damage.
Areas underneath and outside your home should be regularly inspected as well. Outside water spigots and pipes underneath a home or in a basement are often places where people will ignore small problems until disaster finally happens and forces them to make the repairs..
Many of these minor problems can be repaired yourself very easily. It will save you time and money in the long run. Just by tightening a loose connection or replacing a worn out hose will be a lot faster and a lot cheaper than waiting until a break erupts and then extensive water clean up is added to the problem.
